I led the team that built FDP at NHS England. I help Trust leadership teams make informed decisions about adoption and I help data teams operationalise it properly.

About
Before NHS England, I spent 19 years developing data systems for clinicians and executives in NHS Trusts. I built data warehouses, configured EPR modules, ran BI teams, and sat in meetings where the board asked why they couldn't see their own performance data. I know what clinicians face when using electronic systems that don't meet their needs. I know what it's like to manage a SQL Server estate that's falling apart, to lose your best developer to Accenture, and to have a clinical director ask for something your systems can't do.
At NHS England, I led the team that designed and built the data engineering layer of the Federated Data Platform. The team grew from to around 150 under my leadership. I worked directly with Palantir, on the Canonical Data Model, the ontology architecture, and the national product pipeline. I was there for the political battles, the technical decisions, and the trade-offs that shaped what FDP became.
I left under voluntary redundancy in March 2026 because I wanted to say what I think. Inside the system, you can't do that. Outside it, I can.
What I do now is help people who are trying to make decisions about FDP without the full picture. Trust data leads who need to know whether to commit their data warehouse to the platform. Health tech companies who need to understand whether the Solutions Exchange is worth building for. Journalists who need someone to explain what the platform actually does rather than what the press releases say it does.
I also build. I have my own Foundry developer instance where I prototype clinical applications to test what the platform can do when used to its full potential. I've explored the Canonical Data Model from the inside, built ontology extensions with semantic link types and AI agents, and identified architectural gaps that the programme hasn't addressed. That hands-on technical work is what separates me from commentators who write about FDP without having used it.
I run the FDP Pioneers Network, a free peer group for NHS data professionals who are actively building on FDP. Membership is vetted and conversations run under Chatham House Rule.
I write for Computer Weekly, have been quoted in the FT, Guardian, Telegraph, Daily Mail, and BBC, and appear regularly on radio discussing NHS data policy.
